In the morning, we looked at one of our maps and saw a trail that lead up to Grasshopper Glacier. Since we had been off-trail for so long, we thought it would be nice to leave most of our stuff in camp and hike up there. We should have read the map legend more carefully, what we thought was a trail was described as an off-trail route, seldom travelled with no signs of a path
and that the location was approximate
. The first challenge was crossing the West Rosebud at the inlet to Silver Lake.
There was a bit of a trail, but it was very faint and mixed in with animal trails. We would hike for 10 minutes or so, lose the trail, take a GPS reading, look at the map, search for 5 minuts, find it again and repeat. It was a bit frustrating, but the scenery was beautiful.
It soon became clear that we would not be able to get to Grasshopper Glacier - the going was too slow. Then we reached a place where we needed to cross the raging torrent that was the West Rosebud river again, but this time we couldn't find a usable tree. We turned back and happened upon a great view of Silver Lake (after losing the trail yet again).
